CEFR Assessment
How the CEFR placement assessment works, its structure, and how to prepare for accurate results.
The CEFR placement assessment is a conversational interview of approximately 8 minutes. It estimates your speaking level from A1 (true beginner) to C2 (mastery) and generates a personalised lesson roadmap.
Structure
The assessment moves through four stages:
| Stage | Duration | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up | ~1 min | A couple of personal questions to settle you in and get the AI calibrated to your voice. |
| Core tasks | ~6 min | Nine structured prompts of gradually increasing complexity. Tasks include descriptions, opinions, narratives, and abstract reasoning. |
| Open topic | ~1 min | You choose a topic and speak freely. This is your chance to demonstrate vocabulary range and fluency. |
| Results & roadmap | Immediate | Your estimated CEFR level and a personalised lesson roadmap based on the result. |
How to prepare
Speak naturally. If you try to perform above your actual level, the assessment will misplace you and your lesson catalog will show content that is too difficult. Accurate placement gives better results.
Use full sentences, even for simple questions. The AI uses sentence structure as a fluency signal — one-word answers give it very little to work with.
Handle hard questions honestly. If a question is beyond your current level, say so briefly — "I'm not sure I understand the question fully, but I think it means…" — and answer as best you can. Partial answers still give the AI useful signal.
Be in a quiet room. Background noise degrades transcription accuracy and can cause the AI to misinterpret your responses.
After the assessment
- Your estimated CEFR level is saved to your profile and used to filter the lesson catalog.
- Your personalised roadmap highlights recommended lessons for your level.
- Re-take the assessment any time from the Roadmap screen.
Re-taking the assessment
The most useful re-take schedule is once a month. Taking it more frequently makes the results harder to interpret — small session-to-session variation in audio quality or your speaking state can shift the estimate by one sub-level. Monthly results across consistent conditions are a more reliable measure of real progress.
Note: CEFR assessment scores are AI estimates based on transcript analysis, not certified CEFR examination results. Use them as a practical coaching compass, not as an official qualification.
